What is the Difference Between Old Elevit and New Elevit?

The old elevit was called “Elevit 100 or 30 Tablets” the new Elevit goes by the name “Elevit with Iodine”. It is still the same great vitamin for pregnancy, conception, and breastfeeding. But it is now highlighting the really important nutrient – Iodine, which has benefits for both you and the growing baby. Being pregnant and pregnancy itself are wonderful experiences. But being pregnant means you need to add nutrients to your diet to help you through your pregnancy journey. Iodine is one of these nutrients and this can now be found in the new Elevit with Iodine.

The new Elevit still contains all the other great vitamins and minerals you would expect from Elevit Prenatal Vitamins. But it is even better with the addition of Iodine. Iodine is a must have nutrient to support you and your baby during this crucial stage.

Would you like to know why Iodine is so important during pregnancy?

We already know when a woman gets pregnant, her nutritional needs change. This is because she is not only supporting herself but also a growing baby. The reason Iodine is so important, is because it assists in the development of the fetuses brain. And, while pregnant, women have an increased requirement for thyroid hormone. This is supported by iodine.

Why is it particularly important for NZ mums to get Iodine supplementation?

Recent evidence from various studies shows that the iodine status of New Zealanders is declining. It has declined to the point where the government had to intervene.  And one of the actions taken is to add iodized salt to the commercially prepared bread from September 2009.

What other nutrients can I find in the new Elevit?

In addition to Iodine, there are other nutrients essential for the development of the child and the overall health and wellbeing of the mother. The new Elevit also contains the following vitamins and minerals:

Folic Acid

Folic Acid is another term for Folate. This is a water-soluble B-group vitamin necessary for DNA synthesis and the formation of red blood cells. It also has an important role in protein metabolism.  Being water soluble means that the body does not retain the nutrient and it is passed on through the urine. Thus, there is a need to replenish everyday. It is important to take Folic Acid during the initial stages of pregnancy because the developing fetus needs folic acid for proper brain and spinal cord development. A preventive measure for neural tube defects in developing fetus, which is a condition that can lead to various disabilities, including spina bifida.

Iron

During pregnancy, the iron requirement of the mother increases. The circulating blood volume increases to meet the demands of the growing baby. Because of the increase in blood volume, the mother’s hemoglobin levels can drop and iron deficiency can occur.

B-Vitamins

This group of vitamins – B1, B6, and B12 play an important role in the formation of DNA, which essentially constitutes the cell formation of the baby. They also support the healthy function of the nerves and blood.

Vitamin C

Increased function of the immune system is one of the major roles of Vitamin C. It is rich in antioxidants. And helps to protect the body from free radical damage. It is involved in the proper growth and development of bones, tendons, ligaments and skin. It also assists in the proper absorption of iron.
